The Candle: Shinnecock Breeze is named after the territory Ohke Creations was founded on, Shinnecock. The historic Shinnecock Territory is comprised of the entire town of Southampton, NY. Today, this sovereign nation holds around 1,000 acres on a peninsula adjacent to Southampton Village and about 90 acres along the Peconic Bay in Hampton Bays, NY.

Shinnecock roughly means Stoney Shores and has a distinct place in the natural world. Less than a half-mile from the Atlantic ocean to the south, the breeze of Shinnecock bay and the sounds of waves often cross the Shinnecock lands. The western shoreline is along the Shinnecock Bay while the eastern shore is along Heady Creek, historically called Arabash.

 The scents of the Shinnecock Breeze candle are intended to serve as a reminder for us to think often of our relationship we hold with the sea. To think of our future as we leave our footprints in the sand. To leave them clean and with respect.

The Flower: Shinnecock Breeze is infused with the dandelion flowers. Dandelion flowers are often thought of as a pesky weed but are one of the most nutritious flowers we have here on Long Island. Every part of the plant can be used and are full of vitamins, minerals and many health benefits.

The elders on Shinnecock would always talk about the salads they would make for dinner from the plants growing in their yards. The dandelion was a key ingredient in providing the nutrients for the meal!

 The Shinnecock Territory is full of edible plants. In fact, almost all of the plants on Shinnecock are safe to eat. That said, this flower was chosen for this candle because it is the dandelion that often gets overlooked, plucked out of gardens, or exterminated with chemicals in today's society.

 The Dandelion is a mighty flower with life giving properties that we can access today. Maybe we can all think twice before removing this flower from our lives. Instead, let's try to express our gratitude to it as one small way to strengthen our relationship with the land we live on!
