The Candle: Sebonac Beach Rose is named after an area of Shinnecock territory called Sebonac. The name Sebonac comes from the word for the Yellow Lily Flower, "Sebon", and the word for earth, "Ohke". The flower and its roots were used as a great food source.

 Sebonac was the location of a large village that had been occupied for many thousands of years by the Shinnecock community. It is a place of bounty situated on the northern shores of the South Fork of Long Island, NY. It is just under two miles north of the current residential area of the Shinnecock Nation. With access to the salt water bays, a pond, freshwater springs, forests and estuaries, Sebonac was a place of paradise. Today, there is a creek located in its central region that still holds the name, Sebonac Creek.

 Sebonac Beach Rose reminds us of the wonderful bounties our mother, the earth provides. A slice of all that the earth is so long as we protect her and be mindful of her. As powerful and life-giving as she is, her bounty can be so fragile if we are not careful to be mindful of our own footprints.

The Flower: Sebonac Beach Rose is infused with the Wild Virginia Rose, aka Beach Rose, which is native to Long Island. The Virginia Rose has a light aromatic floral fragrance that noticeably fills a room. You can usually find the roses along the shoreline of the ocean and bays across the island.

The Beach Rose is traditionally used as a source of Vitamin C, a food source, and in herbal smoking blends. It holds a meaningful teaching in its beauty as well as its thorns. Though the beauty and scent of the flower calls us to it, the thorns protect the flower from being over harvested. The plant also helps the dunes from being eroded. As the root systems lend stability to the sands, the thorns prevent them from being eaten by animals.

 Sebonac Beach Rose is infused with the Wild Virginia Rose to expose us to the allure we find in nature through scent, taste, and sight. It also reminds us to be aware of how much we take from nature and the imbalance we can cause.
